The battery and its coastal setting
Mistra Battery is an 18th-century coastal fortification whose surviving layout reflects its defensive purpose.
The National Inventory of the Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands describes a roughly semicircular gun platform, a shallow ditch cut into the rock and two blockhouses on the landward side.
A central redan links the blockhouses and contains the main entrance. The inventory records the battery as Grade 1 and notes its scheduling under a Government Notice dated 1995.
Historical records point to an earlier plan for a battery at Mistra Bay: 133 scudi were forwarded for construction in 1714, although the battery does not appear in the original 1715/16 list of batteries. The structure as it stands was built in 1761, during the rule of Grand Master Manuel Pinto da Fonseca.
